Curling

As with much of Great Britain, myself and many of my work colleagues became obsessed with the curling during the Winter Olympics. There were numerous snap chats shared of us all sat around watching the curling, and many hours at work spent watching the curling on the BBC iplayer.

Once the winter olympics ended we had to find something to fill the curling shaped hole in our lives and luckily we came across Fenton's Curling Rink in Kent where we could go and try out curling.

So one day in April we all travelled from various parts of London down to Kent to try our hand at curling. We arrived very early thanks to the traffic in the south-east being kind to us for a change, and just enjoyed some lunch in the sunshine before we ventured inside into the ice dome (I may be exaggerating a bit here, but it was definitely cold).

Inside the curling rink

Before we were allowed anywhere near the ice we had to watch an introductory video, which gave a brief overview of the rules, equipment and safety. We were then given our special shoes which allow you to walk on the ice without fear of slipping over, and were then finally allowed onto the ice.

Our instructor Ben, explained all the basics and then gave us the opportunity to have a go at releasing the stones as well as sweeping the stones. I was surprised to find out that the stones weigh 20kg, and interesting fact the only place they are made is in Scotland.

We then split up into two teams and had a match:

Team Plumb - Gemma, John, Laura

Team Hogan - Chris, Rachel, Matt and Paul

After 4 ends the score was tied 3-3, but after a close final end Team Plumb won the game 5-3!!!!!!!!!

Very close end

We didn't have to wait long before we could have a rematch, as two weeks later we were back at the rink for round 2. This time the teams were (there were two guys there on their own so they joined us):

Team Plumb - Gemma, Laura, John 3rd and Ryan

Team Hogan - Chris, Rachel and Ross

After 6 ends the score was 5-4 and it was another win for Team Plumb - yay!!!!!!! Team Plumb are just simply the best.

Unfortunately we have to wait until October before the rink opens up again, but don't worry Team Plumb will be going back and will be retaining their champions crown :)
