A Christmas Tradition!

A tradition we have in our family each Christmas is that we go ice skating, we usually go to the outside ice rink at Canary Wharf which is brilliant, but every year we regret not going ice skating at Somerset House. So this year back in what I think was about June we decided that this year we would not wait too long to book tickets and this would be the year we go ice skating at Somerset House. I had seen loads of pictures and heard how brilliant it was and wanted to check it out.

So fast forward 5 months and just at the end of November my sister, cousin and I put on our Christmas jumpers and finally managed to go ice skating at Somerset House, and it was brilliant!

As you walk into the courtyard of Somerset House, where the ice rink is, you are greeted straight away by a huge beautifully decorated Christmas tree, which automatically puts you into the Christmas spirit. We then put on our ice skates, which I must say where the most comfortable skates I have worn at an ice rink, and made our way tentatively onto the ice.

They limit the number of skaters per time slot and this meant that the ice rink was not busy and there was lots of room, which was brilliant as sometimes there is not enough room and you feel like people are going to bump into you. There was Christmas music playing in the background and despite the light rain falling, with Somerset House as the backdrop, we had a great evening skating. Each time slot is an hour long and this was plenty of time to perfect my non existent skating skills; I managed to stay on my feet the whole time which was a good start.

There are plenty of other Christmas activities to enjoy either before or after you go ice skating, or while you wait for ice skaters (if like my mum you don't want to venture out onto the ice). Inside Somerset House there are a number of pop up shops, with different things on different days, so it is worth checking out the website. The best part is the free samples lol!

I would definitely recommend ice skating at one of the many outdoor ice rinks this Christmas, but it is worth booking your tickets very soon if you haven't already as the tickets sell out fast. Enjoy if you are going ice skating, I hope you all manage to stay on your feet!

Tips:
Here are a few tips for anyone going ice skating either at Somerset House or any other outdoor ice rink this Christmas:

  • Arrive about 15-20 mins before your time slot so that you can collect your tickets and change into your ice skates, you don't want to be late and not get your full time slot of ice skating.
  • Take an extra pair of thick socks with you, it makes the uncomfortable ice skates that little bit more comfy.
  • Wear warm clothes, especially hat and gloves.
  • Get into the Christmas spirit and wear your Christmas jumpers or santa hats.
  • Most importantly have the best time, lots of fun and take lots of pictures.
Enjoy!
