Afternoon Tea at the Athenaeum Hotel

Hi everyone, my name is Pud and I am an afternoon tea addict :) Oh it feels good to get that off my chest. I love cake in any setting, but there is something special about the tradition of afternoon tea. Last week I went for afternoon tea twice, I know in one week thats quite a lot. It also did not help with my New Years resolution to eat healthier this year lol.

My first stop on my afternoon tea tour was the Athenaeum Hotel in Green Park, London. I surprised my friend for her birthday who had never been for afternoon tea before. The setting of the afternoon tea was stunning. It was held in quite an open room, but it still felt very private as there were divides between the tables, which I liked and it was something different to the other places I have been before. The seating was very comfortable with big sofas and armchairs, and so the whole atmosphere was relaxed.

The service was outstanding. We had a few dietary requirements and I felt the hotel had gone above and beyond to help us out and make sure we had everything we needed. I had also told the hotel when I booked that it was my friend's birthday and so they brought out a cupcake with a candle in it, which was lovely.

We started off with a selection of sandwiches, which were yummy although standard to what you tend to get with any afternoon tea. We then had two scones each, which were delicious, which we covered in clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam. The jam was absolutely delicious, I would probably go as far as to say some of the best jam I have had. There was also some lemon curd for the scones, but I have to admit I didn't taste this as I am not a fan. There was also a selection of mini cakes, which included a cheesecake, mini tartlet and chocolate covered strawberries.

The highlight of the afternoon tea had to have been the cake trolley that was brought out about half way through the seating. My friend said my eyes lit up when I saw the cake trolley :) The trolley included vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, lemon drizzle cake, a big Victoria sponge cake and a caramel cake. The waiter told us we could choose whatever we wanted, so we could have had a slice of everything if we wanted. I managed to restrain myself though and just had a chocolate cupcake and huge slice of the Victoria sponge. The Victoria sponge was yummy, albeit a bit dry, but I combatted this my having some of the homemade jam we had been given for the scone with it.

I would give the afternoon tea at the Athenaeum Hotel 4 out of 5 and would definitely recommend it :)
