I love a spontaneous day trip and last week my cousin and I happened to both be off on Thursday and so jumped in the car and drove to Cambridge. I like Cambridge as there is so much on offer from beautiful buildings, lovely riverside walks, shops, yummy food and the chance to punt along the river, also it is only about an hr drive from London (that is if you don't get stuck in traffic, which we did on the way home) and so is perfect for a day trip from London. We decided not to go punting this time round as it was raining, but will definitely be going back in the summer for a punt along the river. There was still lots to explore!
I went to a campus university and so find it interesting walking around the city looking at the different colleges, which are all stunning buildings. As I was walking around I did think it would be great going to university in one of these amazing buildings, but I do think I prefer a campus based university as I loved the community spirit that it offers, but everyone is different.
Cambridge does not have a cathedral, which I was surprised to learn, but you will find the King's College Chapel, which like all the buildings in Cambridge is stunning. Unfortunately we did not get the chance to have a look inside this time, but it is definitely on the list for our next visit.
We decided to wander down the backstreets towards the River Cam, which flows through Cambridge, where we then walked by the river in an area that is referred to as the Backs (it is all very well signposted from the city centre). It was a grey day, but the cloudy skies and rain did not dampen our spirits.
One tip if you are planning on driving to Cambridge - we parked in the Grand Arcade Car Park which was very expensive so it might be worth researching cheaper places to park, I will definitely be doing this before my next visit.
So if you are looking for a day trip from London I would definitely recommend Cambridge, you will not be disappointed.
