Well unfortunately the Queen was not home, but I must say her home was stunningly beautiful. I have just been for a tour of Buckingham Palace, which is something I have wanted to do for years, and I must say it was well worth the wait.
The tours of Buckingham Palace only run each year for a limited period, typically between the end of July and the end of September. This year the last tour is on the 27th September so there is still time to grab a last minute ticket.
There are a range of tickets you can buy, including one for just the state room and one that takes in the state room and the palace gardens. If you have a ticket for the state rooms, you will have a time on your ticket which indicates your entry time. Then once you are in the palace you can walk around at your own speed and leisure. There are free audio guides, which were brilliant, so make sure you pick one up before you head into the palace. If you have a gardens highlight tour ticket you will have a time on this ticket too. This time is a strict time where you have to be at the gardens tour meeting point and if you miss your time slot you might not get onto another tour. During the gardens tour you will be shown the highlights of the palace gardens by one of the excellent tour guides. While walking around the gardens its hard not to imagine little princes and princesses running around playing, or the Queen taking a leisurely stroll around her beautiful rose garden.
The state rooms tour showcases some of the most beautiful and ornate rooms I have seen. From the Throne Room to the White Drawing Room where the Queen and members of the Royal Family gather before official occasions.
Unfortunately you can't take any photos around the palace or the private gardens, but I did manage to take a few pics of the gardens and lakes from the visitors path.
If you have a spare day in the next week and there are tickets available I would definitely recommend a tour of Buckingham Palace, or make sure its in your diary for next year. The great thing is you can get your state room ticket stamped before you leave and that gives you free readmission to Buckingham Palace within the next year. I will def be going back for another tour next year :)
