Thursday Travel Guide - Sorrento, Capri and Pompei

I am in love with Italy! The next few Thursday travel guides are going to focus on the different cities I visited during my Italian roadtrip earlier this year. First up its Sorrento, Capri and Pompei.

My first tip to anyone travelling to Sorrento is to get a coach from Naples airport as it takes you along the stunning coastline, and will give you your first glimpse of the impressive Mount Vesuvius. You catch the CurreiViagii Coach from directly outside the arrivals terminal, it will take you about 1 hr and 15 mins to get to Sorrento and costs 10 euros per person.

Once in Sorrento there is loads to see, from Sorrento itself to a number of places nearby that you can daytrip to including Pompei.

As soon as we arrived we dropped off our bags and jumped straight on a train to Pompei, where we spent the afternoon exploring the ancient ruins. The ruins are amazing and so impressive and with the volcano just in the background you can help but walk around imaging what it must of been like for the people living there. There is a lot of walking and the floor is uneven so I would recumbent wearing comfy and supportive trainers. Also if you are travelling with kids I would suggest taking a carrier rather than a pushchair as a pushchair would be a nightmare on the uneven floors. Also make sure you take some water and snacks (these are always a must for me whenever I am sightseeing lol!).

The next day we took the ferry over to the island of Capri. We hadn't originally planned to go to Capri, but one of the guys on reception at our hotel told us it was a must see and I am so glad he did as I would have been gutted to miss it.

The ferry takes about 20-25 mins to get from Sorrento port over to Capri and during your journey you are treated to amazing views of Mount Vesuvius and the Amalfi coast. Once on the island there is lots to do from exploring the shops and lanes to taking a trip up the cable car. You will need at least a full day on the island to do most things, we unfortunately did not get to see everything we wanted to, but thats ok as it means we can go back :)

We did explore the stunning Gardens of Augustus, which offer amazing views of Capri. Its about a 10 mins walk from the main square, but the walk is lovely and you could just do what we do and grab a gelato to enjoy on the way. Its €1 to get into the gardens.

Capri is popular with celebrities and so the shops are mostly designer and the food and drink is quite expensive, so if you travelling on a budget it might be worth taking some food and drink with you. Capri is a must see on your trip to Sorrento or the Amalfi coast and I can't wait to go back soon!

We stayed 2 nights in Sorrento at Hotel Regina which was right by the sea. The hotel was clean and the staff were very welcoming and helpful. The best and most unique thing about this hotel was the amazing views of Mount Vesuvius from the breakfast room on the top floor. You walked out the lift to be greeted by panoramic views of the volcano through the floor to ceiling windows. I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel and I would go as far as saying it is one of the best hotels I have stayed in.

Views of Mount Vesuvius from the hotel breakfast room. Stunning!

Happy travelling!
