I am sat here watching the football and thought what a better time to write about tea and cake!
On Monday we took my friend for afternoon tea for her 30th Birthday. We decided to go somewhere a bit more casual as she has a baby and so settled on Bea's of Bloomsbury, which is somewhere I have been once before. The first time we went to Bea's of Bloomsbury we went to the one in Bloomsbury, but this time we thought we would try out the St Paul's cafe.
The St Paul's cafe is lovely, very close to St Paul's Cathedral and has big glass windows, which means it is flooded with natural light, although if you are sat downstairs it does also mean people may have a look in with envy at your yummy cakes. The only thing I would mention is that we were sat downstairs by the window and it was warm in the sunshine, despite it being just a mild day in late February (this is worth bearing in mind especially if you are planning on going in the summer).
The staff are lovely and welcoming and the service was good. We started with some brioche rolls filled with mozzarella & caramelised onions, cream cheese & walnuts and cheese, parma ham and honey. I find sometime you can fill yourself up on the sandwiches/rolls, but these were nice and bitesize so meant there was still plenty of room for cakes.
There were also:
scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam - the scones were delicious and homemade. The scones are always one of my fave part of any afternoon tea.
passionfruit marshmallows (although we did struggle to actually taste the passionfruit)
3 types of brownies - a normal chocolate brownie, a peanut butter brownie and a blondie. I did like the chocolate brownie, but I found the blondie a bit dense. I don't like peanuts so gave my peanut butter brownie to my friend.
Meringues - not something you typically get with afternoon tea which I liked.
We also had a selection of cupcakes - peanut butter, mango and vanilla, raspberry dark chocolate and lemon meringue.
On the whole I would give the Bea's of Bloomsbury afternoon tea a 3 of out 5. I liked the variety on offer and there were lots of things that I thought were yummy, including the scones. One thing to note though is that you only get the table for 1.5 hours, which is about 30 mins shorter than a lot of other afternoon teas.
If you were looking for a casual afternoon tea, one not in a hotel, I would check out Bea's of Bloomsbury, or if you are meeting a friend you can just pop in for a cup of tea and a slice of cake (no booking is needed for this).
Remember there is alway time for tea and cake :)
